Brother Oliver Revisits a Classic: “Mad World”

“I was laying on my friend’s couch in a freezing cold apartment. It was winter, his heat was shut off, I was trying to sleep, and all I had was a Carrhart jacket for a blanket. On the TV, the closing scene of Donnie Darko was playing through the darkness to the sound of ‘Mad World’ . . . ”

That was Brother Oliver’s introduction to Tears For Fear’s iconic song, “Mad World”. Gary Jules’ rendition of the song was prominently featured in the cult classic film Donnie Darko in a hauntingly perfect blend of sight and sound that’s captured the hearts of listeners & viewers for decades.

The song has magnetic qualities—and it’s been covered by countless artists over the years. For dedicated fans of Brother Oliver, the psychedelic folk band from Greenville, South Carolina, they’ve grown to expect it at shows—“Mad World” is one of the only covers the band has ever introduced into their live show. Even further, they recorded and released their own studio version of “Mad World”, performing in their own signature psychedelic folk styling we’ve grown to expect from the group.

Certain songs never die—they immortalize, take new forms, and continue to re-introduce themselves over and over again. You can listen to Brother Oliver’s rendition of “Mad World” here or on any major streaming platform.
