This Week: Songs You Need To Hear

Every week, artists send us a ton of music to review, cover, and work with. And if we’re being honest, the biggest challenge going through them is that so many of the songs are really, really good. So, this week we have six more releases that caught our ear and are worthy of your listening attention. Let’s begin:

I. “Billboard” by Mike Legere

Mike Legere

First off, we have a gritty indie rock piece from the Toronto-based Mike Legere. This song is a middle-of-the-night drive, speakers on blast kind of feel to me. The song is about the pervasiveness of big data and smartphones, but we’ll let Mike tell that story in the lyrics. I’m too busy vibing to the droning rock feel of this song.

II. “Everything” by Phebe Starr

Phebe Starr

Next, we have a song from the Australian indie-pop artist Phebe Starr. And I’ll be honest, we couldn’t pass this song up because the chorus simply sounds so iconic. Phebe said when it was being written “I imagined to be walking through the dark matter of the universe.” Well, with a chorus like that, I think she made it to the other side.

III. “Timing Right” by KellyMarie

KellyMarie

The production and feel of this new song by KellyMarie is addictive as it gets. It’s wide in the stereo, it’s catchy, it’s driving, and it’s substantive. It’s what you want to hear in this genre. And it’s the first song off her forthcoming debut album, so she’s an artist to watch and follow.

IV. “Fresh Paint” by Shake the Dust

Shake the Dust

The sound of this new song by Shake the Dust could be canon in the genre. It pays homage to throwback 70s rock, but holds its own modern edge. The man behind the project, Phil Lomac, is a Spartanburg, SC native who’s been prolific in the scene for nearly two decades.

V. “If I Don’t Love Me” by Martin Jasper

Martin Jasper

Martin Jasper is a pop artist hailing from the Netherlands. The 24 year old is making a quick splash with his heartfelt singles, his newest one being “If I Don’t Love Me”. I don’t know how else to put it, other than it’s packed full of good vibes. And his music video pairs with it perfectly.

VI. “Make It Up To You” by Pierce Alexander

Pierce Alexander

Pierce Alexander is no stranger to Forthright—he’s been one we’ve been following for a few years now and his debut album, which released this past Friday, has not disappointed. His intentional and transparent approach to each song makes for an introspective listen. Listen to “Make It Up To You” off the album above.
